How To Decrease Your Risk of Illness and Promote Recovery From Exercise
We have all been affected by the number of required closures and the government cracking down on any business that defies their orders. The most frustrating part is that our gym, and everybody else’s, is closed for the next three weeks, at least. Nothing more infuriating than not being able to throw some steel around.
During times of mental and physical stress, we at Steel Machine believe in optimizing your health and maintaining a healthy and robust immune system by supplementing with the following vitamins.
Vitamins are micronutrients that have physiological effects on various biological responses, including immune function. Therefore, vitamin deficiency leads to increased risk of developing infectious, allergic, and inflammatory diseases.
Vitamin B: As humans we cannot make B vitamins. We must consume them from exogenous sources which is why it is important to eat foods that are rich in vitamin B. Some food sources include meat, egg, fish, and shellfish. Other sources, for various B vitamins, include dark green leafy vegetables, avocado, broccoli, whole grains, beets, and nutritional yeast(important for vegans). Vitamin B absorption can be inhibited by alcohol consumption. This in turn can affect optimal immune system function. Another source of vitamin B is through supplementation with a B complex vitamin.
Vitamin C: Is a potent antioxidant that helps fight against free radical damage contributing to immune defence by bringing free radicals to glutathione in the cell to be neutralized. Vitamin C is important in the remodelling of collagen which is found in all of our connective tissues. Vitamin C deficiency results in impaired immunity and higher susceptibility to infections. There is a lot of research going on right now looking at the effects of super doses of Vitamin C in cancer treatment. Vitamin C can be found in many food sources including peppers, citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables, and green leafy vegetables. If you decide to increase vitamin C intake through supplementation, it is important to stay hydrated.
Vitamin D: Research has shown that you can create up to 10,000 IU’s of Vitamin D with 20 to 30 minutes of sun exposure. Research has also shown that in the northern hemisphere there is not enough annual sunlight to produce enough active Vitamin D in the body, therefore, it is recommended to always supplement. Vitamin D has many functions including enhanced immune response and calcium absorption. If you choose to supplement then Vitamin D3 is the active form.
Important: always read the labels on your supplements and check to make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.
Immunocal: “Is a unique and specially formulated natural protein that helps maintain your immune system. The immune system is incredibly complex, but a major cornerstone relies on its ability to obtain a molecule called glutathione. Glutathione exists in every cell of your body and is essential for life and critical for health.” (Reference)
Immunocal has been clinically proven to raise levels of glutathione in the body.
“Many natural products are available that claim to help your immune system, but very few have undergone the rigorous testing and published human trials that Immunotec has accomplished over the years. Besides its ability to raise glutathione and all the benefits that come with it, Immunocal proteins have a very high BV (Biological Value).” (Reference)
